Growth

Our commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion.

At Spilman Thomas & Battle, we foster a professional environment that enables individuals from different backgrounds to grow to their full potential. Our ability to draw from our diverse workforce creates competent, innovative, solution-oriented teams that serve our clients' needs and seek the best outcomes. Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is reflected in our efforts to recruit, retain, and invest in our talent as we continue to strengthen our firm so people of all backgrounds regardless of race, color, national origin, age, ethnicity, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or transgender status), religion, veteran status, disability, and socio-economic status are welcomed and supported.

Our commitment to DEI is further evidenced by our membership in the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD). The LCLD actively promotes diversity in the legal profession through initiatives aimed at advancing a new generation of leaders.

How we work.

The defining characteristic of Spilman is that we place an emphasis on our people, beginning with our summer associate program. Fully committed to the practice of law, we also concentrate on fostering a firm culture that allows Spilman to be more than just a place to work.

We take care to ensure our summer associates are involved in all aspects of the firm. They are given meaningful work, on actual cases. We encourage client contact, where appropriate, and we have summer associates attend depositions, hearings and trials when possible. We want to make our summer associate experience as realistic as possible.

Spilman’s summer program is its main avenue for recruiting full-time associates. Our hiring policy for summer associates always has been to hire only as many as we believe we will need to fill full-time associate positions in the future. This eliminates any need for our recruits to compete with one another, fostering a collegial and creative atmosphere among our summer and full-time associates and encouraging them to seek each others’ help on projects for the benefit of our clients.

We strongly believe in maintaining an appropriate work/life balance at Spilman. Our billable hour requirements for associates are reasonable when compared with other firms our size, which allows our young attorneys to maintain a full and rewarding life outside of the firm. We believe in developing well-rounded individuals who will both contribute to our law firm and become an integral part of the community.
