Spilman Member Amsbary Appointed Cabell County Circuit Court Judge

December 9, 2025

Huntington, W.Va. — Spilman Thomas & Battle (Spilman) announced that David D. Amsbary, partner in the law firm’s Huntington office, was appointed by West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey to serve as Judge on the Sixth Judicial Circuit in Cabell County. The appointment follows the retirement of Judge Paul T. Farrell in October.

“I am honored by the trust placed in me to serve the people of Cabell County on the Sixth Judicial Circuit,” Amsbary said. “I look forward to upholding the rule of law with fairness, integrity, and unwavering commitment.”

“This really is a dream come true. I can confidently say, but for this special appointment, I would not want to practice law anywhere other than Spilman,” he continued.

Michael J. Basile, Spilman’s Managing Member, added, “As a firm, we are incredibly proud of David’s commitment to justice and public service. His record – both professional and civic – speaks to a deep-rooted dedication to serving West Virginians.”

Earlier this year, Amsbary was elected President of the West Virginia State Bar, a position in which he has worked to uphold the integrity of the legal profession, ensure access to justice, and support attorneys throughout West Virginia. He has been a member of the Cabell County Library Board of Trustees since 2016 and served as President in 2023. He has also been a Board Member of Goodwill Industries of KYOWVA Area, Inc. since 2024.

At Spilman, Amsbary’s primary areas of practice are health care law, labor and employment law, commercial transactions, and litigation. He is admitted to practice law in West Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, and Kentucky. He earned his undergraduate degree, cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts and his law degree from The Ohio State University.
