September 20, 2012

Region’s HR Professionals Gather for North Carolina SuperVision™

Winston-Salem, N.C. — The Triad’s leading human resources and employment law practitioners convened today at the WinMock at Kinderton conference center to learn best practices for hiring, firing and everything in between. SuperVision™, the popular event series that is now in its sixth year, is the brainchild of Spilman Thomas & Battle, PLLC (Spilman), a regional law firm whose labor & employment law practice has been nationally recognized for its excellence.

“Year after year there has been an increase in the number of employment-related lawsuits and administrative claims,” said Jeffrey D. Patton, member in charge of the firm’s Winston-Salem office and leader of the firm’s labor and employment practice in N.C. “Our SuperVision conferences, like this one, are specifically designed to assist businesses to take a proactive approach in managing their workforce in an effort to prevent, and if necessary, defeat employee claims.”

Presentations included hot topics such as best practices in pre-employment and hiring strategies, current trends in FLSA exemption classifications, wage and hour issues, collective and class action litigation, traditional labor law issues, new NLRB rulemaking, union organizing efforts, workplace investigations, disciplinary actions, and avoiding and defending cutting-edge employment claims.

Each presentation was specifically geared toward helping companies prevent and prepare for employee-filed lawsuits. Nine Spilman attorneys joined client representatives from Debbie’s Staffing, Hooker Furniture, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated, Southern Community Bank and Trust, and University of North Carolina School of the Arts to provide valuable insight on these topics.

A highlight of this year’s North Carolina SuperVision™ was the keynote presentation delivered by W. K. “Ike” Keener, Jr., President and CEO of Allegacy Federal Credit Union. He spoke on the effects of company culture on managing human capital.
