Spilman Thomas & Battle Helps Employers Guard Against Trending Labor and Employment Lawsuits
June 22, 2012
Region’s HR Professionals Gather for Regional SuperVision™
Charleston, W.Va. — The region’s leading human resources and employment law practitioners convened today at the Charleston Marriott Town Center to learn best practices for hiring, firing and everything in between. SuperVision™, the popular event series that is now in its sixth year, is the brainchild of Spilman Thomas & Battle, PLLC (Spilman), a regional law firm whose labor & employment law practice has been nationally recognized for its excellence.

“Year after year there has been an increase in the number of employment-related lawsuits and administrative claims,” said Eric W. Iskra, chair of Spilman’s labor and employment group. “Our SuperVision conferences, like this one, are specifically designed to assist businesses to take a proactive approach in managing their workforce in an effort to prevent, and if necessary, defeat employee claims.”

Presentations included hot topics such as best practices in pre-employment and hiring strategies, current trends in FLSA exemption classifications, wage and hour issues, collective and class action litigation, traditional labor law issues, new NLRB rulemaking, union organizing efforts, workplace investigations, disciplinary actions, and avoiding and defending cutting-edge employment claims.

Each presentation was specifically geared toward helping companies prevent and prepare for employee-filed lawsuits. Eleven Spilman attorneys joined client representatives from Res-Care, Inc., a leading in-home health care provider based in Louisville, Ky., and Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated to provide valuable insight on these topics.

A highlight of this year’s Regional SuperVision™ was Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito’s keynote presentation. She spoke generally about the economy and urged support for the Federal Transportation Act and a national energy plan that encompasses all forms of energy, including coal, natural gas and alternative energy sources.
