Spilman Plays Major Role in First-of-Its-Kind Labor & Employment Law Book

August 12, 2019
Charleston, W.Va. — Spilman Thomas & Battle (Spilman) announced that four of the firm's lawyers contributed to a first-of-its-kind book, "Trial Techniques for the Labor and Employment Law Practitioner," published by the American Bar Association's Section of Labor and Employment Law.

"A book like this has never been done before," said Eric W. Iskra, who served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the book and also leads Spilman's Labor and Employment Practice Group. "This is the first trial techniques book dedicated solely to trying labor and employment jury trials. Our intent is for it to be a vital resource for labor and employment attorneys in the courtroom."

"The ABA Section of L&E Law has made a concerted effort to broaden its library over the past several years. This book provides practical, balanced tips and insights from lawyers who have insider perspectives and real-life experience."

In addition to Iskra's role in publication of the book, Spilman Counsel Samuel M. Brock III served as Chapter Editor. Jeffrey D. Patton, who is Member in Charge of the firm's Winston-Salem, North Carolina office, co-authored a chapter, as did Counsel attorney Charles L. Woody.

The book discusses the following topics:

  • Effective trial advocacy
  • Preparing for trial
  • Motions in Limine
  • Final pretrial conference
  • Jury selection
  • Opening statements
  • Direct examination
  • Handling expert witnesses
  • Trial graphics and courtroom technology
  • Jury instructions
  • Verdict forms
  • Closing arguments
  • Post-trial motions

While involvement in this publication is the most recent demonstration of knowledge, Spilman lawyers have long been considered thought leaders in labor and employment law. The firm began hosting its SuperVision™ labor and employment event series in 2007. Every year, hundreds of business leaders attend various symposia throughout Spilman's Mid-Atlantic footprint. Spilman also publishes quarterly e-newsletters featuring personally authored articles on labor and employment topics.
