Spilman Member Wellons Named on 2021 "Leaders in the Law" List

Roanoke, Va. — Spilman Thomas & Battle (Spilman) announced that partner Hugh B. Wellons was named on Virginia Lawyers Weekly 2021 "Leaders in the Law" list.

Now in its 16th year, this awards program recognizes the lawyers across the commonwealth who are setting the standard for other Virginia lawyers. “Leaders in the Law” are recognized for changing the law, serving the community, changing practice or improving Virginia’s justice system, among other accomplishments.

Wellons focuses his legal practice on corporate law, banking and finance law, securities law, and biotechnology law. He also chairs Spilman's community banking practice group.

Wellons counsels a large variety of businesses, including large public companies, small closely held businesses, and financial institutions. He advises clients on such matters as corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, and regulatory compliance. He has served as lead counsel on approximately 10 public offerings, five secondary public offerings, 20 acquisitions by larger companies, 10 private offerings, and 15 financial institution mergers.

In the local community, Wellons has served as a Trustee of the Roanoke Law Foundation and on the Board of Directors of Blue Ridge Legal Services, Inc.

Wellons has been nominated by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America in the areas of Banking and Finance Law, Biotechnology Law, Financial Services Regulation Law, and Securities/Capital Markets Law. He was recognized by The Best Lawyers in America as "Lawyer of the Year" in Roanoke, Virginia for Banking and Finance Law in 2012 and 2016, and for Financial Services Regulation Law in 2014 and 2017.
