— Spilman Thomas & Battle (Spilman) announced that Fred W. Hartman
has joined the law firm as a counsel attorney in its North Carolina office.
Hartman has more than 20 years of experience in sophisticated tax practice, including tax planning, policy, controversy and compliance. He works to proactively reduce tax liabilities for clients by creating unique tax-planning solutions. He advises clients on the tax consequences of transactions and investments, including cross-border lending and IPOs, and the impacts of tax regulations.
Additionally, Hartman represents clients in all aspects of tax litigation in state and federal courts. He also represents clients at IRS Appeals Conferences, before the United States Department of Treasury and IRS Office of Chief Counsel, and before Congress.
"Fred brings a really unique perspective to Spilman given his past work with other organizations and provides us with additional depth on international matters," said Jeffrey D. Patton, Member in Charge of the firm's North Carolina office. "We are excited to have him on the team and ready to assist clients with a breadth of taxation issues and corporate law matters."
Hartman joins Spilman after serving for many years as in-house counsel. He also served as tax counsel to the United States Senate Committee on Small Business.
He earned his undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University, his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and his LL.M. In Taxation, with distinction, from Georgetown University Law Center.
